The Americans - despite receiving a fraction of their previous salaries - were grateful. Two thousand American workers were hired back by Fuyao and many more Chinese workers and supervisors were imported on low wages and lower expectations of workplace safety. In 2010, that factory was touted as an icon of manufacturing's rebirth via foreign investment, with a Chinese industrial giant - Fuyao Glass America - at the helm. ![]() On the concrete plains of Dayton, Ohio, the working class and the middle class became the new precariat in 2008, when General Motors shuttered its assembly plant and 10,000 jobs were lost. And yet American Factory, now on Netflix, is a stunning work of documentary - and all the more nightmarish for its depiction of the real-world consequences of capitalist degeneration. It's the kind of astonishing story that could serve as the dramatic spine of an alternate history novel: a Chinese billionaire steps in to save the victims of US manufacturing's decline.
